ABBYY Vantage FAQ
Find answers to Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: How does Intelligent Document Processing work?
Intelligent Document Processing applies AI and machine learning techniques to enable technology to read and process content in documents like a human. While incoming business data arrives from a variety of sources—email and attachments, digital documents (e.g., PDF), faxes, paper scan images, etc.—IDP provides a time-saving, error-reducing results to ensure that the data from those document sources (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured) is automatically processed quickly and accurately.
Q: Is Intelligent Document Processing the same thing as OCR?
No. While IDP does incorporate data capture, its capabilities are broader. IDP extends optical character recognition (OCR) and data capture technology to incorporate “intelligence” using machine learning, NLP, and other advance technologies. This adds more expert skill and decision-making to the processing of content.
Q: Is Intelligent Document Processing the same thing as robotic process automation (RPA)?
No, IDP is not RPA. While RPA can automate repetitive tasks within defined business processes that run on data, RPA does not have the skills needed to understand the content in context and make skilled decisions. RPA can be augmented with Intelligent Document Processing such as ABBYY Vantage to acquire the skills needed to intelligently process document content.
Q: Is Intelligent Document Process a new technology?
The foundation of IDP, which is OCR, has been around for decades. But IDP today is much more than that. Legacy capture solutions rely on simple character recognition, templates, rules-based document processing, and basic data extraction and validation capabilities. With the addition of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) delivered as pre-trained document “skill” models, modern IDP offers skilled reading and extraction of document data, with the ability to make decisions about what documents mean in the process, in the moment. Modern IDP more closely reflects the way humans process documents.
Q: Where can IDP be applied?
Intelligent Document Processing has been implemented for content-centric processes, including Financial Services, Insurance, Transportation & Logistics, Supply Chain, Healthcare, and more. The best way to ensure success with an IDP implementation is to begin with process mining. This helps you first understand your process and the way content enables it, helping you determine where document automation can have the greatest impact.
Q: How can I get started with Intelligent Document Processing?
With ABBYY Vantage, IDP is readily available and accessible to the business user or citizen developer. Vantage is the industry’s first low-code / no-code IDP platform that offers pre-built “document skills” that can immediately start understanding your business documents with basically no deployment time.
